Orchard Details

This beautiful, old unspoilt orchard lies between Dean Lane and Startins Lane in Cookham Dean. It was planted at different stages somewhere between 1940 and 1960 (although OS maps show an orchard on this site from at least 1910) and covers about 4.5 acres with about 145 cherry trees of at least 4 varieties. It still produces sweet, juicy cherries every year.

Old cherry orchards like this are a rarity and important to keep for two reasons. Firstly, in the last 50 years we’ve lost 90% of our cherry orchards in the UK and now import around 95% of the cherries we eat. Secondly, they are amazing habitats for all sorts of wildlife and support huge biodiversity.
